Okay, this came out of nowhere. A new Persona 3 figure? And it’s a figma? And it’s actually GOOD? You could knock me down and All Out attack me right now.

The things that always turned me off of figmas were the ugly joints and awkward plastic stands to keep them in the more fancy positions. It’s true you could have a variety of interesting and hilarious poses to display the character in, but personally I’d rather have a figure with one really nice pose rather than a flexible one that looked awkward and doll-like. Also, they market figmas as “figures” when they’re really just high quality action figures. Action figures are meant to be played with, not posed as works of art (I find the phenomenon of nerds “collecting” action figures and keep them in boxes untouched hilarious, you might as well just buy a nice static one if you’re just displaying them). And I certainly wouldn’t pay the same price for a figma I’ll rough up for a figure I’d display in my place as a work of art.

However, Aegis works surprisingly well as a figma – because she’s a ROBOT. The joints really mesh organically with her design. And her face sculpt is great – the killer app for me when it comes to figures. Hmmm, seriously starting to doubt my former figma convictions . . .

She comes with different faces. This is her “LET US COMMENCE WITH AN ALL-OUT ATTACK” face.

They added the Rocket Punch. Hilarious. It’s always looked like something Buzz Lightyear would wear if he’d became a pirate. It’s perfect for brofists and falcon punches as well.

Also great thing about Aegis figma: she comes with these clear plastic feet that keeps her upright. So you don’t have to have a weird plastic clear crane sprouting out of her back like some robotic tumor.

Aegis figma comes out this year in October. She doesn’t have a set scale, but they say she’s about 150 mm tall. She could be a good match for my 1/10 Main Character. Argh argh decisions.

I’m glad that Persona 3 is still getting love, but seriously we need more quality Persona 4 figures. And throw in some Raidou Kuzunoha ones that AREN’T $100+ garage kits. DO IT FATLUS.

Ooishi, nyan?

This super cute figure is part of Megahouse’s Excellent Model series. Like with most models in this series unfortunately, the base is pretty cheap plastic with an awkward raised platform anchor . . . but the decals are pretty sweet.

Also her hair is a tad too turquoise, but Ranka has crrrazy animu hair that changes color constantly, so it’s forgivable. And the flower hair ties are just too cute!

Are those little white buns on her qipao slits?

Apron and buns are removable. (Buns as in the food, of course!)

Her face is really sculpted well, especially the eyes and the slight blush. Although I’m kind of wondering why they’ve only taken photos from one main angle, and the white photoshopped background . . . I like Good Smile Company and Alter’s promo photos, they really show their product from all angles and realistic backgrounds to demonstrate their high quality. Looks like Megahouse still has a ways to go.

Ranka is out this year in October, I’ve seen her price range ~$65. She’s really cute, I’m glad Macross Frontier is getting such good figures out!

I’m not usually into Nendoroids, but seriously. LOOK AT HER. S-So cute. ♥

It’s so far only confirmed to be on sale at this summer’s Comiket, but hopefully Good Smile Company will open it up for regular sales as well. Touhou is just too big for this to be a Comiket exclusive ha ha.

Alpha Omega is really moving up the ranks in the figurine companies, I remember their Code Geass ones and they were pretty ace. Apparently they go for super popular shows and spend the extra money for their licenses, as opposed to the higher ups like Good Smile Company and Alter who mostly release figures from obscure eroge and games, which have prettier designs and cheaper licensing costs.

Anyway, this is probably the best Sheryl I’ve seen, I remember seeing the prototype a few shows back. I love the removable uniform. The colors really make her beautiful, especially the paint job on her hair. Sheryl has one of my favorite anime hairstyles ever – can’t wait to cosplay her!!

Needs a matching Ranka in her orange-yellow monstrosity though. Even though Sheryl’s my favorite I love Ranka as well, and I hope that they somehow both end up with Alto and have happy lesbian threesomes (c’mon Alto is such a woman, you know the ladies top. ♥)

Man I look dead, I just got four wisdom teeth removed this week and can barely talk. Also I don’t do the “AM I CUTE UGUU??” look very well. Need to smile more!!

They’re slowly adding episodes over time (I believe they’re up to episode 10?) but they’re without subtitles. Still I know the plot of original YGO! by heart so for me it’s mostly for 1) Japanese practice, 2) amazing seiyuu + music (I mentally orgasm whenever Tsuda Kenjiro speaks, ffffff), and 3) trying to recognize soundclips that all the the Niconico memes use.

Also hilarious, it’s only available – IN AMERICA. Shame, someone should upload them onto Niconico so MAD makers can have quality sources for their videos.

Last year at AX I attended her panel and attended her concert at the Nokia Theater. Luckily I got front row seats from a couple who were leaving, and was right across the aisle from her crazy fanclub members who flew over from Japan to support her so I blended right in ha ha. She’s so cute and quirky in person, I love how she’s not afraid to be herself, and she’s so talented. Also Sora-iro Days (空色デイズ） is one of my favorite GAINAX OP songs EVER. Keep on trucking, Shokotan!

P.S. The post’s title is from one of Ang Lee’s old films, I kind of have his movies on the mind since I went to see him + James Schaumus talk last Monday here at Cal. Total street cred for my folks back home (now if only I can tickets to see the Dalai Lama when he comes in April!) Good semester to be Chinese American at Berkeley.

Anyway, at the event they had some awesome Macross Frontier figures that made me explode. I’m not into mecha, so these lovely ladies definitely caught my eye!

Not sure what’s up with Sheryl’s color inaccurate sparkly skirt, and I’m pretty sure Ranka’s shoes are red . . . but holy crap Klan looks amazing. ♥__♥ And the sculpts are great, loving the poses and faces. Hope they come out soon!

She has already been out since December, but there hasn’t been many preorders because I believe she’s exclusive to atlus “D” shop. There actually two versions: one with her default fan weapon and the other with her special weapon (the one you receive when you redo her dungeon and defeat her optional boss.) I prefer the special of course – peacock feathers!

I’m surprised they made a figure of Yukiko, though. She was announced before the game came out, so I assume they thought she would become the “Mitsuru” of P4 and made her in anticipation of her popularity. However, none of the girls in P4 are really “outstandingly popular” on the levels of P3′s Aegis and Mitsuru; in fact, based on doujin output and fansites alone Naoto is probably the most popular, and she’s a trap! (I find it odd people like traps so much – maybe it’s the blurring of gender lines, the mystery, the shock factor? There is something attractive about androgyny, I admit.)

Still, the cast of P4 as a whole is way more developed and likable than P3′s. I’d even argue that the guys of P4 are among the best video game characters yet – Brosuke, Kanji as the most badass moe semi-homo ever, and Teddie/Kuma’s Twilight-sparkle power. Not to mention DILF Doujima and Crazydachi. Also the MC eat little girl’s pudding and not afraid of anything. ♥

There’s a secret figure, too . . . I’m guessing it’s Grell’s normal form, or trap!Ciel.
